Everything Danish citizenship asks for

Continuous residence: 9 years continuous. 8 for refugees, 2 for Nordic citizens.
Permanent residence permit: Held at least 2 years when the bill passes.
Danish, Prøve i Dansk 3 or 2: Prøve i Dansk 3 at B2 is the general requirement. Prøve i Dansk 2 counts instead for anyone who has received no assistance under the Active Social Policy Act or the Integration Act in the last 2 years and no more than 3 months of it in the last 9 years. The naturalisation circular also lists other accepted exams. Which one applies to you is the Ministry's call.
Citizenship test, indfødsretsprøven: 45 questions, 36 to pass, and 4 of the 5 values questions must be right.
Self-support: No assistance under the Active Social Policy Act or the Integration Act in the last 2 years, and no more than 4 months of it combined in the last 5 years. Pensions and certain one-off minor payments do not count against you.
Clean criminal record: No disqualifying convictions.
Approval by parliamentary bill: Parliament grants citizenship by naturalisation bill once everything else is in place.

How days outside Denmark count

There is no single fixed yearly cap and long absences can break continuity. Verify with the Ministry of Immigration and Integration.

A single trip over 28 days counts against you.
More than 42 days abroad in a year counts against you.
Absences across the qualifying period are capped at 365 days in total.

What is changing

What to watch

Processing frozen: All ordinary naturalisation cases paused since 6 Mar 2026. A new government and migration minister are now in place, but processing restarts only once a new cross-party agreement on citizenship is reached.
Rules may apply backwards: New criteria can be applied to applications already submitted, so meeting today's rules is not a lock.
Expert group report: A panel reviewing individual screening is expected to report later in 2026.
Bill timing: When active, naturalisation bills normally pass twice a year, in spring and autumn.
