Statsborgerprøven is the Norwegian citizenship knowledge test. It is sat in Norwegian, and passing it — or the social studies test, samfunnskunnskapsprøven — is one of the conditions for Norwegian citizenship.

Passing Statsborgerprøven

How many correct answers do you need to pass statsborgerprøven?

24. The test has 36 questions and runs for a maximum of 60 minutes, with three options per question and one correct answer. HK-dir counts 32 of the 36 towards your score — the remaining questions are trial questions being tested for future papers.

Can you take statsborgerprøven in English?

No. It is written in Norwegian at A2 level and offered in Bokmål and Nynorsk. If you would rather sit the social studies test, samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Norwegian counts instead of statsborgerprøven for citizenship.

When can you sit statsborgerprøven?

Through the year, at approved test centres, rather than on fixed national dates. You book directly with a centre via HK-dir at prove.hkdir.no, which is why there is no single national deadline to plan around the way there is in Denmark.

Norwegian citizenship also asks for 8 years of residence on the standard route, a language qualification and a clean record — each with its own rules on absences and timing.
