- Habitual residence
- Eight years of residence. More than six weeks abroad in a year and all that year's days abroad are deducted from your residence time.
- Permanent residence
- Citizenship asks for a qualifying status when you apply: a permanent residence permit, residence status, right of residence or a residence card. If you moved to a partner in Sweden, the first permit runs for up to two years, and once you have lived here with a residence permit for at least three years you can apply for permanent residence when you extend, showing you can support yourself and live a well-behaved life. Your residence years for citizenship count from arrival on a permit granted for settling, so the clock does not wait for permanent residence.
- Self-sufficiency
- Income of at least 250,200 SEK a year, at least 20,850 SEK a month before tax.
- Knowledge of Swedish society
- UHR's society test, sat on paper in Swedish, multiple choice with four options a question. UHR has not published the number of questions, the time limit or the pass mark for the next sitting. Migrationsverket invites you if you have no other proof. A passing grade in samhällskunskap from grade 9, upper-secondary or folk high school also counts, so you may already have this.
- Swedish language test
- A Swedish reading-and-listening test for applicants aged 16 to 66, planned by 1 October 2027. Migrationsverket says it may come later than planned. Until then school grades, the highest SFI course, Tisus or a similar certificate count.
- Orderly and honest life
- No disqualifying record.
- Decision by Migrationsverket
- Migrationsverket decides the application once everything else is in place.
