What medborgarskapsprovet covers: the eleven subject areas set in law

Most pages about the Swedish citizenship test describe its subjects from the outside, by reading UHR's study material and summarising it. There is a shorter route. The government wrote the subjects into law when it created the test, in section 2 of Förordning (2026:451) om medborgarskapsprov, and that text is public.

One thing to hold on to before the list. Section 2 says the required knowledge of Swedish society ska till exempel avse these areas: shall for example cover them. It is a statement of what the test is about, not a closed syllabus, and UHR is not limited to it. Anyone presenting the eleven as a complete checklist of what you will be asked is reading more into the wording than it carries.

The eleven subject areas, as the regulation lists them

The thirteen chapters you actually study

The eleven areas are the law's language. UHR turned them into a study book, Sverige i fokus, and the book has an introduction plus thirteen chapters. These are what a reader sits down with, and the order UHR sets them in.

The two lists do not line up one to one, and that is fine

Eleven areas, thirteen chapters. They are not a mapping, and UHR has not published one. Reading the two lists side by side, the fit is loose in both directions: four chapters carry names that all sit under the single statutory area about Sweden's democratic system of government, the constitutional laws and the legal system, and several chapters plainly touch more than one area at once.

Two of the statutory areas have no chapter with their name on it: climate and the environment, and Sweden's geographic and geopolitical circumstances. UHR has not published a mapping saying where they sit, so if you are working through the book and wondering why there is no climate chapter, the answer is that the book is not organised by the regulation's list. Read the whole thing rather than hunting for eleven matching chapters.
